Guide To Pirate Parenting

Whilst sailing the seven seas of the world wide watery web, fishing for free-ebooks and unique parenting posts, I hooked this:  Guide to Pirate Parenting.  Cap’n Billy kindly gave me permission to post some gems from his chest of treasures:

Avast ye land lubber spawn raiser!
If you’re like most parents, you long to raise your children as pirates but just don’t know how. In the Guide to Pirate Parenting, Cap’n Billy “The Butcher” MacDougall provides everything you need to know to turn your little powder monkeys into happy, healthy buccaneers. You’ll learn:
  • At what age your child should be able to remove a bottle cap by taking out his glass eye and using his eye
  • Which offense requires administering The Flying Dutchman Wedgie
  • How to prevent sogging the quartermaster
  • The best place to maroon your disobedient child
  • How to remove chewing gum or a giant octopus from your child’s hair
  • The difference between plundering and pillaging
  • How to convert your minivan into a pirate schooner
  • When to smack your teenager in the side of the head with an oar
And best of all each information-packed section of the Guide to Pirate Parenting ends with “Your pirate’s progress,” a short quiz that shows whether your child is reaching his or her pirate development milestones.

Check out the site and get your own copy of the paper book or download the free e-book, (you are invited toss a few coins to the pirate should ye choose), by talented Tim Bete. Cap’n Billy’s Magic Pieces-of-Eight Ball will provide answers to all your questions, so give it a shake, or try out Cap’n Billy’s pirate schooner name generator or some nursery rhymes and other surprises.

My Parent Book

I asked my friend Angie from My Parent Book to give us the first online parenting site review:

“I created My Parent Book after being disappointed with the way my friends and my self were treated on a different parenting website. I felt that the general atmosphere of that site was too policed and “nice” no one was free to disagree or have an opinion that didn’t go along with the majority. So out of the ashes My Parent Book was born.

My site is a place where parents can vent, talk, laugh, share, support, gain information, have fun and feel safe. As admin I will only step in when it is 100% needed. The only thing I will not tolerate is verbal abuse, bullying and spam. I believe people can argue the idea without attacking the person. I’m also new to the whole ‘running a website’ thing so they may be some hiccups along the way but I will do my best to keep the site fun, fresh and vibrant.

I will also take member suggestion into account as much as I can. When you join you get your own profile, you can up load up to 5000 pictures, have your own blog, join in many different forum discussions, join a diverse range of groups, participate in live chat discussions and make new friends.”

Ever since I became pregnant in 2005 and joined my first pregnancy/parenting website, I thought it would be cool to have my own.  Mainly because I didn’t want to feel restricted by the rules of others and have to keep my true opinion to myself on matters that I felt passionate about. I waited all through my childhood to grow up and have my say, my way…  So, here I am, with my own self indulgence that I dedicate to my greatest achievements, MicroMe and MissyMe.

MicroMe & MissyMe May 2010

The biggest stumbling block for me was worrying about not being an expert on all things parenting related, website design and writing. There are many experts in life; medical experts, teaching experts, scientific experts… You name it, if there is a field for it. There is most likely a certificate, diploma, degree or doctorate in any field you can name and those who just claim to be an expert in everything under the sun because they can.

Then it dawned on me; I have two very healthy, happy, strong children and I am their parent, so I am an expert on them and myself.  You are an expert on you and your own children too and use your own judgment along with medical and educational experts to decide what is best for your children and your family.

I truly believe that while there are many avenues we can pursue as parents to get advice to help us with our children; the true answers lie within us.  Sometimes it is hard to find them, however if you are open, honest and trust yourself, you will surprise yourself and learn to trust your own instincts more.

Don’t be afraid of making mistakes, any action on behalf of your children is better than no action and remember, experts in all fields make mistakes too… Trust in you and believe in you; your children do.
