I’m so excited, our little family is growing… My eldest nephew Dan and his gorgeous girlfriend Loren are having a baby girl early next year.  I am not sure why I am so excited about it, after all, I will be a great-aunt, so it dates me somewhat and my beautiful younger sister is a bit stunned about being a grandmother at 36.  I am willing to bet she is over the moon when she sees the latest addition to our clan, as the baby will override any concerns in that area.

Me, Mum, my sister and my two lovely nieces – lots of love.

This baby is already so well loved, as are the other two babies that will be born to our cousins Anna and Julie in January; if only all babies could be brought into a world full of love…  I heard on the Oprah show the other day, that at one time they never thought they’d abolish slavery, yet they did, so it can happen.  Unfortunately slavery is still rampant throughout the world today; this interactive map on Free The Slaves website highlights the fact that “although slavery is not legal anywhere, it happens everywhere.” How do I digress from the joy of a baby girl coming into the world to slavery which is such an unsavoury topic that I find myself shunned at dinner parties?

I know that this baby girl will be born into a welcoming world and she will be cherished and loved by her entire family.  Her beautiful young mother will receive love and support from her family and friends to ensure that this experience is as wonderful as it should be… Yet for so many women around the world, pregnancy and childbirth are dangerous and deadly.  Women are raped, enslaved and simply disappear off the face of the earth without a trace.  Babies are born into a world of slavery, sexual depravity and danger… Could you imagine such a life for your precious little beings?

So why does the birth of ‘just another girl’ make me so excited while so many females suffer?  With the birth of each new girl in the world, comes the opportunity to enlighten another caring soul about the plight of her sisters in less fortunate areas of our globe.  Enlightened women are empowered women; whilst women outrank men in numbers, we are still effectively oppressed and ruled by men in many countries.  The Spice Girls had it right back in the 80′s, girl power is what it’s about.  With education and organisation we can create the world we want to live in; a world where all new life, male or female is treasured and revered for the miracle it truly is.

PS:  For the record, I am not a feminist, however I do believe in equality and I also think that by emancipating the women of the world, we free men to live a happier life as well… Women are their mothers, sisters, wives, girlfriends and friends, if women are free and happy, so are men.  The family unit is of far more value than the community accords it at this time… The time for change is now.

PPS:  One of my best friends has just reminded me that feminists were after equality… So, I guess I am a feminist after all; what is a day without learning?  Thanks Kat icon smile Sassy Parents Women
