Empowering Girls…

Last modified on 2010-11-26 06:37:27 GMT. 18 comments. Top.

…To Fly High!  Empowering Girls; an appropriately titled site, recently opened a new online store 7Wonderlicious. Both sites encourage women to join a global tribe and role model the true ability of girls and women to be anyone and do anything they want in life.  Gender stereo-typing through misguided role models, media and peer pressure often results in girls who do not reach their true potential personally, professionally or socially.

Inês from Empowering Girls was kind enough to allow me to pick a post to share with you all.  It was a hard choice between the original Welcome and the great post on 7Wonderlicious; however I feel this Welcome Post explains what this great new site is about beautifully:

“Our mission is to reduce the threats to a girl’s health, happiness, confidence and ability to succeed by overturning the gender stereotypes that affect a girls’ lifelong potential.

Our research shows that gender stereotypes have a devastating impact on five critical areas of a girl’s life. Stereotypes promote:

1.  lack of confidence, distorted body image and low self-esteem;
2.  low involvement in sports and physical activity;
3.  lack of engagement in science, technology, engineering and mathematics;
4.  lack of boldness, risk taking, perseverance and resourcefulness;
5.  challenges with assertiveness and fear or unwillingness to speak up;

Our focus is to support you: parents, educators and trusted adults in your journey to develop the future generation of confident and empowered young women. We will provide you with information and tools that will allow you to prepare your  pre-school aged girl to be immune to the plagues facing women in today’s world.

There are fantastic organizations out there focusing on mentoring and coaching teens and women in overcoming the limiting beliefs and stereotypes that are fed to them every day by out of date social and cultural rules, old stories, media and unfortunately also parents and educators.
Our strategy is a little different, we  focus on building a future where we will not have to try to remedy the harm done, where we will not need to patch things up.

The first years of a girl’s life are a crucial time when their identity and model of world are being shaped. Our goal is to nurture in our girls such a strong empowered identity and belief system that they will simply ignore misinformation and limiting beliefs.

Do ensure you sign up to our weekly parenting and coaching weekly tips and tools series, only available via subscription.

Love,

Inês

The site is also supported by a great blog and facebook page; well done Inês I am really looking forward to following your journey and reporting your achievements.

While I am unashamedly proud of being a female and fond or promoting girls and women who I find admirable, I am not without my own list of inspirational males of our wonderful species!

Kurt Fearnley is the first man to come to mind, because I love being active and this guy epitomises  that in a big way!  He is also a local to the region I live in, so I feel duty bound to honour him first in a long line of outstanding men.  In fact, check out the video and make a note of some of the other amazing people that Kurt mentions.

An amazing athlete, Kurt has had more success than the average person would dream of… Which is precisely why he isn’t average.  His acheivements as an athlete are outstanding and he is a champion around the globe as you can see by this amazingly long list of results.

He also conquered the Kokoda Track last year a feat that has eluded many so-called able bodied people who have attempted to complete this gruelling task.  If you are looking for someone who has a strong spirit and proves that anything is possible; Kurt Fearnley is your man.

Kudos to you Kurt, best wishes for a bright and happy future!  You remind me that the only true limits we have, are those we impose upon ourselves.  I hope that parents and teachers encourage children to learn about your abilities, dream large and chase those dreams with as much heart as you do.

I am grateful for the woman that I am, the women that I know and the bright women in my family; especially my nieces; Sophie and Olivia, my baby Lola Rose and my newest niece who is yet to be born. May they all grow up to be inspirational, empowered, vibrant, women who are loved and respected.

My Inspiration

When my son was born, I was confused and overwhelmed with the responsibility of parenting him… Now I am reveling in the privilege accorded to me; he is my inspiration and an excellent reminder of what life is about. He is so enthusiastic, he is full of fun and fit to burst. He keeps us honest with a barrage of intelligent questions. He doesn’t pretend to be anything he is not; laughs when he is happy, cries when he is sad. He challenges the status quo and has an excellent thought process unhindered by the belief systems of others.

As soon as my daughter was born, the words bliss and joy kept going round and round in my head… Finally I knew the true meaning of these words and now I realise that I was born full of bliss and joy; as were we all.  Like most people, I was taught to conform; you don’t run around being enthusiastic, fun, honest, blissful and joyous on a daily basis without attracting some criticism. I am grateful that I have two beautiful children who have taught me that the only person I need to approve of me; is me. I am the proud Mumma of MicroMe and MissyMe; I am the luckiest mother in the world! I will ensure that I embrace the future and do all I can to earn their respect so that they can be proud of Me.

I believe in seeking to improve myself, my life and that of my children in any way that works for us. My children are well coordinated, healthy, strong, bright little beings and along with MaxiMe’s and our parenting style will nurture their passion for life. Their passion for life has reignited the my own desire to get the most out of life and enjoy every moment as much as I can… Thank you my munchkins, you make living fun! This is dedicated to you both, the funny things you say; the wonderful things you do and the way you teach your father and I to be the best people we can for you both.

I’m so excited, our little family is growing… My eldest nephew Dan and his gorgeous girlfriend Loren are having a baby girl early next year.  I am not sure why I am so excited about it, after all, I will be a great-aunt, so it dates me somewhat and my beautiful younger sister is a bit stunned about being a grandmother at 36.  I am willing to bet she is over the moon when she sees the latest addition to our clan, as the baby will override any concerns in that area.

Me, Mum, my sister and my two lovely nieces – lots of love.

This baby is already so well loved, as are the other two babies that will be born to our cousins Anna and Julie in January; if only all babies could be brought into a world full of love…  I heard on the Oprah show the other day, that at one time they never thought they’d abolish slavery, yet they did, so it can happen.  Unfortunately slavery is still rampant throughout the world today; this interactive map on Free The Slaves website highlights the fact that “although slavery is not legal anywhere, it happens everywhere.” How do I digress from the joy of a baby girl coming into the world to slavery which is such an unsavoury topic that I find myself shunned at dinner parties?

I know that this baby girl will be born into a welcoming world and she will be cherished and loved by her entire family.  Her beautiful young mother will receive love and support from her family and friends to ensure that this experience is as wonderful as it should be… Yet for so many women around the world, pregnancy and childbirth are dangerous and deadly.  Women are raped, enslaved and simply disappear off the face of the earth without a trace.  Babies are born into a world of slavery, sexual depravity and danger… Could you imagine such a life for your precious little beings?

So why does the birth of ‘just another girl’ make me so excited while so many females suffer?  With the birth of each new girl in the world, comes the opportunity to enlighten another caring soul about the plight of her sisters in less fortunate areas of our globe.  Enlightened women are empowered women; whilst women outrank men in numbers, we are still effectively oppressed and ruled by men in many countries.  The Spice Girls had it right back in the 80′s, girl power is what it’s about.  With education and organisation we can create the world we want to live in; a world where all new life, male or female is treasured and revered for the miracle it truly is.

PS:  For the record, I am not a feminist, however I do believe in equality and I also think that by emancipating the women of the world, we free men to live a happier life as well… Women are their mothers, sisters, wives, girlfriends and friends, if women are free and happy, so are men.  The family unit is of far more value than the community accords it at this time… The time for change is now.

PPS:  One of my best friends has just reminded me that feminists were after equality… So, I guess I am a feminist after all; what is a day without learning?  Thanks Kat icon smile Parenting Inspirations
